Mockpup Add to Chrome
Mockpup vs PerfectPixel

The free PerfectPixel alternative

PerfectPixel has been the default pixel perfect Chrome extension for years, and it's still a good one. The free plan gives you 2 layers per domain, with ads. Unlimited layers, folders and the dark theme are part of Pro, at $25 a year. If that's fine by you, stay put. Mockpup is for people who want the same overlay workflow with no layer cap and nothing to pay.

What PerfectPixel does well

Its site says it has been around since 2012 and is used by 350,000+ developers, and it has the Chrome Web Store's Featured badge. It is available for Chrome, Edge and Firefox today. Since version 3.2 (September 2026) it can move its panel into the browser's side panel, which keeps the viewport clear in DevTools device mode, and that's free for everyone. Mockpup is new, Chrome-only, and doesn't have that kind of track record yet.

Here's where they actually differ.

Moving your mockups over

There's no importer for PerfectPixel's saved layers. Your mockups are plain image files, though, so you just add them again.

  1. Add Mockpup to Chrome and open the page you're building, on localhost, staging or production.
  2. Press Alt+P to open the panel.
  3. Drop in your mockups. Use the same PNG, JPG or SVG files, paste from the clipboard, load from a URL, or paste a frame copied in Figma. If you have a few breakpoints, folders keep them apart.
  4. Same nudge keys. Arrow keys move 1px and Shift+arrow 10px, as in PerfectPixel. Alt+H hides the layer, Alt+C turns on diff mode, and ? lists the rest.

You can keep both installed. Just turn one off while you use the other, so you don't get two panels on the same page.

If your overlay comes in twice as big, or you're not sure which Figma frame to export, see how to compare a Figma design with your live website.

Free, with no layer limit

No account needed, and your mockups stay in your browser.

FAQ

Is PerfectPixel still free?

Yes. Its pricing page lists a Free plan at $0 with 2 layers per domain, supported by ads. Pro costs $25 a year and adds unlimited layers, folders, layer rotation and the dark theme, without ads.

Can I import my PerfectPixel layers into Mockpup?

Not directly. Add the same image files again by dropping, pasting or loading them from a URL. Once they're in Mockpup, you can export the whole setup as one JSON file and import it on another machine.

Is Mockpup really free?

Yes. Unlimited layers and folders, with no ads and no account to create. There's no Mockpup server, so your layers stay in your browser and nothing is sent to me.

Does Mockpup work in Edge or Firefox?

Edge, Brave, Arc and Opera can install extensions from the Chrome Web Store, so Mockpup should run there too, though I test it in Chrome. Firefox is planned. Until then, if you work in Firefox, PerfectPixel has a version for it.

What does PerfectPixel do that Mockpup doesn't?

It can dock in the browser's side panel, which helps in DevTools device mode. It rotates layers (on Pro). It runs in Edge and Firefox. And it has been around since 2012.
